Motorcycle safety tips for Ohio bikers

Few experiences match the exhilarating thrill of riding your motorcycle on the open road. It almost feels like you are flying and free from the rest of the world. Of course, this feeling does not come without risks. Every time you get on your bike, you should have a healthy realization that the road is dangerous and you have little protection in the event of a collision.

With these facts in mind, you should take some steps to ensure your safety. Here are some things you can do to protect yourself from getting into an accident and sustaining injuries.

1. Use a good helmet

According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety motorcycle safety manual, one out of every five accidents involving motorcycles results in a neck or head injury. These injuries cause the majority of deaths of motorcyclists. Research shows that wearing a proper helmet can significantly reduce such injuries. Your helmet should fit snugly, have no obvious defects and be DOT-compliant.

2. Wear protective clothing

Clothing is important when riding your motorcycle. Not only does the right outfit keep you comfortable, but it also protects you during a crash. Wear a snug jacket and pair of pants made out of leather or sturdy synthetic materials. Your shoes should cover and support your ankles. Gloves made from leather or a durable synthetic material can improve your grip and protect your hands during a crash.

3. Ride responsibly

You cannot assume that drivers of cars or commercial trucks will notice you or give you the right of way. To prevent getting hit, do your best to be visible by wearing bright clothing, using reflective tape and staying out of blind spots. You should always leave a lot of space when following, lane sharing and passing.

While you may never be able to completely eliminate the possibility of crashing, following these three tips may significantly reduce your chances of getting injured in an accident.
