What are the most common motorcycle accident injuries?

Despite the thrill and fuel efficiency of riding your motorcycle, it requires a lot of skill and coordination. Due to your lack of protection compared to an enclosed vehicle, you must wear proper safety gear, ride defensively and remain aware of your surroundings. However, even the safest motorcyclists can end up injured in an accident.

What happens if you get into a motorcycle crash? These are the most common motorcycle injuries based on information from the U.S. Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

1. Bone fractures

Most motorcycle crashes result in the bike falling over. If this happens to you, your leg might stay underneath your bike and result in a broken leg. Leg injuries are the most common among motorcycle accident victims. You could also get arm or wrist fractures from trying to break your fall.

2. Brain injury

Head injuries are also common. While helmets help prevent head injuries and brain trauma, Ohio helmet laws are not very strict. If you hold a valid motorcycle license for at least a year, you are not required to wear a helmet. Despite this legal freedom, you should always wear a DOT-approved helmet to reduce your risk.

3. Road rash

If you make contact with the road during an accident, you could scrape your skin. This injury is more common if you do not wear adequate protective gear. There are varying degrees of road rash, ranging from mild to severe. In the most severe instances, your the skin comes off completely. Make sure you wear protective pants and gloves to prevent this.

Riding responsibly and reducing risk of accidents is a must if you want to be as safe as possible. While you cannot predict the behavior of drivers, you can always do whatever you can to decrease an accident. If you wear the right gear and ride safely, you can lower your risk of getting one of these common injuries.
