What are the deadliest types of construction accidents?

If you consider construction to be one of the most dangerous jobs you could have, you would be correct. In 2015 alone, 937 construction workers across the country lost their lives on the job, making up 21.4 percent of workplace deaths that year. If you or someone you love works at an Ohio construction site, it would be helpful to know which accidents are the most prevalent and dangerous.

You face the worst risk of falling at a construction site. According to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, falls top the list in fatal construction site accidents. Perhaps the scaffold you are working on has gaps in its walking surface or was not built properly and is likely to collapse or tip. An elevator shaft might be open and empty, or your safety harness could be faulty and result in a fall.

In addition to falls, your other safety risks in construction include being electrocuted, being struck by an object or getting caught in or between an object. The cable you are working near might not have been de-energized, or your equipment may not be properly grounded. A co-worker could be careless operating heavy machinery and pin you, or someone might accidentally drop a heavy object onto the ground from several stories up.

These common accident types are known as the “fatal four” in the construction industry. In 2015, these accidents were responsible for 64.2 percent of construction worker deaths. By understanding the risks and taking the proper safety precautions, you can greatly improve your chances of returning home safely at the end of each day.
