Can I adopt a child in Ohio?

If you are an Ohio resident who is considering adopting a child, you will be glad to know that the only hard and fast requirement is that you be 18 years old or older. As AdoptUSKids.com explains, however, you will need to go through pre-adoption training and a home study process before you will be allowed to adopt.

You will be assigned a trained adoption assessor who will help you assess your experience, strengths and skills related to children in order to determine if adopting a child is the right choice for you. In addition, your home study will include the following:

  • A criminal background check of you and all adult members of your household
  • A check of child abuse and/or neglect investigations in which you and all adult members of your household have been involved
  • Medical reports for you and everyone, including children, in your household
  • Fire inspection and safety audit of your home

Adoption costs

There is no charge to you for either your pre-adoption training or your home study if you go through your local children’s services agency. Should you choose to go through a private agency, however, you may have to pay associated fees. In this event, Ohio has several financial assistance programs and services for which you may be eligible. In addition, you also may be eligible for state and/or federal subsidies.

Ohio adoption statistics

Sadly, over 12,500 Ohio children currently are in foster homes and other facilities while waiting to be adopted. Most of these children are not infants or toddlers, but rather are old enough to be attending elimentary or high schools.

Many children want to be adopted as a group with their brothers and/or sisters. Other children waiting to be adopted have special needs. The good news is that in addition to state adoption agencies, there also are approximately 100 private Ohio adoption agencies. Finding the child or children for whom you can provide a forever home could be the most rewarding thing you ever do. While this information should not be taken as legal advice, it can help you understand the process and what to expect.
