Distracted driving as a fatal road hazard

When drivers hit the road in Ohio, there are certain laws they have to abide by. Driving under the influence, speeding, and reckless driving are just a few behaviors that are illegal. But what about distracted driving, which can be just as deadly?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving is vying for a top spot regarding the most dangerous behaviors on the road. Driving while under the influence has been the most widely-known hazard for decades. However, many campaigns designed to cut down on DUI-related accidents have been successful. Distracted driving is now the big problem, and incidents are on the rise. Accidents related to distraction took almost 3,500 lives, injuring an additional 391,000 in 2015 alone. This is of an estimated 660,000 drivers who may be using electronic devices while driving every single day.

The Federal Communications Commission also highlights the danger of mobile devices in particular and their role in distracted driving accidents. The breakdown of their statistics show that per day on average, over 8 peopleare killed and over 1,161 are injured because of distracted driving behaviors. Mobile device usage is largely attributed for that rise. There are other behaviors drivers should avoid, as well. This includes eating, focusing on pets or passengers, changing music, applying makeup, or any other task that could take one's eyes off the road.

Unfortunately, distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic. More people are being injured in distracted driving-related incidents every day, which is why campaigns and individuals who have suffered from these accidents work so hard to ensure awareness is brought to the issue.
